What does made-to-order mean for a rug?

A made-to-order rug is woven or braided after you place your order, rather than pulled from a warehouse shelf. Many of the rugs we carry are crafted this way by long-established American mills, which is why some ship in a few days and others take about two weeks. If you have ever wondered why one rug is ready immediately and another has a short lead time, this is the reason.

Why are some rugs made to order and others in stock?

It comes down to how each maker works. Some collections are produced in standard runs and held in stock, so they ship quickly. Others, especially handcrafted braided and woven rugs, are made in the size and color you choose once the order comes in. Holding every size and color of a handmade rug in a warehouse is not practical, so the maker builds yours to order.

When a rug is made to order, you will see a short lead time noted on the product page, typically around two weeks before it ships.

Is a made-to-order rug better quality?

Made-to-order is not automatically higher quality, but it tends to go hand in hand with traditional, made-in-the-USA construction. Several of our braided and woven collections are produced by mills that have been weaving for generations. You are getting a rug built for your order by people who do this work full time, rather than mass overstock.

What are the advantages of buying made to order?

• Less waste. Nothing is overproduced and discounted later, which is part of why the craftsmanship holds up.
• Consistent condition. Your rug has not been sitting folded in a warehouse or handled by other shoppers. It is new, made for you.

What should I expect after I order?

Here is the typical path for a made-to-order rug:

• Order placed. Your order goes to the mill that makes the rug.
• Production. The rug is woven or braided in your chosen size and color. This is the lead time shown on the product page, usually about two weeks.
• Ships to you. Once made, the rug ships and you receive tracking.

In-stock items skip the production step and ship sooner. If you need a rug by a specific date, check the lead time on the product page before ordering, or reach out and we will confirm timing for you.

How do I know if a rug is in stock or made to order?

Look for the lead time note on the product page. If a production time is listed, the rug is made to order and that note tells you how long before it ships. If no lead time is shown, the item is in stock and ships on our standard timeline.

We are an authorized retailer for every brand we carry, which means the rugs come directly from the makers and arrive exactly as the mill intends.
